FAQ – about diamonds and precious stones

What is a diamond

A diamond, like a Lonsdaleite and a graphite, consists of a chemical composition that is determined by carbon. The carbon molecules are connected to one another in a very specific spatial arrangement, which is similar to a lattice.

In contrast to other minerals or precious stones, the diamond has a hardness that makes it by far one of the most solid minerals currently found on earth. However, this hardness differs in different degrees of hardness, which always depend on the direction and the connection between the carbon crystals.

A diamond is characterized by the fact that it is initially colorless and appears to be translucent. If different shades of color occur, then the basis for this is represented by different inclusions and impurities. For this reason, diamonds in colors and shades such as yellow, brown, red, green or blue are not uncommon. However, they are not that valuable.

Are diamonds found in Germany?

This question should be answered in the negative. The most common deposits for diamonds and other precious stones are in Russia, on the African continent, mainly limited regionally to South Africa. A large diamond deposit is located in Europe in Arkhangelsk, in Russia. Australia, China and India are also known for their smaller diamond deposits.

How are diamonds produced synthetically?

This goal is implemented using a special technology, which is also referred to as the high pressure – high temperature process. Graphite is used as the base material, which is subjected to enormous pressure by a hydraulic press. The print capacity is almost 6 gigapascals. In addition, the pressing takes place at the same time under a temperature whose minimum is 1500 degrees Celsius. During this method, the reactions taking place are accelerated by a catalyst. The carbon contained in the graphite is converted into a thermodynamically more resistant form during this process. This shape is the man-made diamond.

A period of approximately several weeks is specified as the period of time for this artificially induced chemical conversion process.

Another method for the synthetic production of diamonds is the technology known as shock wave diamond synthesis. Explosive pressure waves are generated here. The end product of this technique is the so-called diamond powder, which is characterized by gradual degrees of fineness.

Another alternative for the production of synthetically produced diamonds is plasma coating. It is characterized by a coating that corresponds to the properties of the diamond. This is characterized by a thin layer of diamond-like carbon and has an enormous hardness and optimal characteristics with regard to the so-called sliding friction.

What are synthetic diamonds?

These differ from natural diamonds and gemstones that have been created in the earth over millions of years in that they are produced in an unnatural, so-called synthetic process.

Another problem that arises in connection with diamonds and precious stones is counterfeiting, which must be separated from the valuable original stones. An important method to differentiate between artificially and naturally colored diamonds is absorption spectroscopy as a special laboratory technique.

How do you recognize a diamond?

Diamonds are stones that get their optical attractiveness and their unique shine through their excellent refraction of light. However, the diamond is only called a gemstone after it has been cut.

Several parameters are important for the recognition of a diamond. First, the density is determined, its degree of hardness is measured and its thermal conductivity is checked. In particular, these are some physicochemical properties that cannot be seen with the naked eye.

Characteristic features of a diamond, which come to light in an optical inspection, are mainly its luster, its light scattering, which is also referred to as dispersion, and the refraction of light. This is also known as refraction in specialist circles. In the visual inspection, inclusions and impurities are also noticeable, which are often found in a natural diamond due to its formation.

What is a brilliant?

Diamonds are subjected to special grinding processes to improve their optical effect. A characteristic and often used type of grinding is the so-called brilliant cut. During this processing, the rough diamond receives a unique grinding, which corresponds to an excellent shape. After finishing the cut, it has at least 32 so-called facets. In professional circles, the other features are described as a table in the upper part, a round girdle and a minimum of 24 facets in the lower diamond part.

Under the name “Fancy Diamonds” diamonds are used which have colored shades. However, these are less beautiful and are not as popular as pure white or pure intense colors.

After the cut, diamonds are rated. This is done by the CCCC, which includes the weight in carat, the color in color, clarity, the purity and cut of the cut.

white diamonds incredibly beautiful

There are many gemstones, but only a few have as many stories and myths as diamonds, many, especially women, are fascinated by them, but only very few will ever wear or wear one of the small and large magical works of art by Mother Nature own.

While women are mostly enthusiastic about the brilliant shine and charisma of diamonds, men often see investments in them as well. Diamonds are made of carbon compressed under great pressure. And the purer a diamond is, the more valuable it is, but there shouldn’t be any really pure diamonds; with the appropriate magnification, every diamond has even the smallest inclusions.

Some white diamonds have a very eventful history or have become very famous, some because of their extraordinary beauty, but some also because of their history or their owners. Some of the most famous white diamonds are for example the “Cullinan”, with 3,106 ct it is the largest diamond ever found. It was found in 1905 and in 1908 it was split into 105 stones. The nine largest diamonds from the “Cullinan” were cut into crown jewels and are located in the Tower of London. Another well-known diamond is the “Millennium Star”. This teardrop-shaped diamond has a weight of 204 ct and is the second largest diamond with the color grade D, the only larger one being the 273 carat “Centenary”. Other famous white diamonds include the “Koh-i-Noor” and the “Orlow”.

Blue diamonds, a precious rarity

Diamonds are something very special, but among these there are still some that are even more valuable and outstanding than the others and blue diamonds belong to these very special “stones”. For centuries we humans have been fascinated by the small works of art of nature, which only become truly magical when they are cut.

As is well known, diamonds consist of pure carbon, the blue color of the blue diamonds is due to the element boron which is included in the carbon compound. Diamonds of this color are very rare and yet they are not as rare as green or red diamonds. However, so far only a few people have been lucky enough to be able to take a look at such a diamond; it is not uncommon for them to be found in museums or art collections or are part of a piece of jewelry that can be found behind the tightly closed doors of a safe. Of course it is possible to see photos of the noble pieces on the Internet or special books, but that is mostly all. Since the 112-carat “French Blue” was sold by Jean Baptiste Tavernier to Louis XIV in 1669, the blue diamonds have attracted the attention of people all over the world. The “French Blue” was ground down to 45 carats and is known today under the name “Blue Hope”, it is one of the most famous but also most legendary diamonds, which many still consider it cursed. Almost as well-known and even bigger are the stars Mithras, they were named after the Persian goddess Mithra, each of these 3 absolutely identical diamonds weighed 145 carats uncut, how much they weigh today when cut is unfortunately not known because they are in private hands and the owner or owners do not want to provide any information. There are countless myths and stories about these rare treasures of Mother Nature, but it is not uncommon for them to contribute to the fact that the gemstones continue to increase in value. Other famous blue diamonds include the “Heart of Eternity” or the “Blue Wittelsbacher”, which adorned the Bavarian royal crown (1918) until the end of the monarchy.

Another unnamed blue diamond was auctioned off by the auction house Sothebys in 2008 and achieved the highest bid ever paid for a diamond Adorn the British Crown Jewels, found in the famous Cullinan Mine in South Africa. This mine is considered to be the most profitable mine when it comes to blue diamonds. But blue diamonds were and are also found in Asia and South America.

Black diamonds

Black diamonds are known as such because the Portuguese coined the term “carbonados diamonds” in the middle of the 18th century, by means of which they compared these diamonds visually with porous charcoal. There are generally many myths about black diamonds that are said to have taken place in India in particular: Some people believe that black diamonds resemble snake eyes and are therefore under the sign of an Indian god. This belief gives black diamonds a special meaning in contrast to variants of other colors.

They came into fashion especially in the 90s, as did black gemstones, but they were already known in earlier years. For example, there was the 67.50 carat Orlov, which belonged to the princess of the same name. Black diamonds are therefore very rare designs that mainly occur in Brazil and Central Africa.

The special thing about black diamonds is the graphite as a coloring substance, which is usually in the form of many inclusions. This makes these diamonds very difficult to cut, which is why they are rare. Only occasionally can black diamonds be cut and polished to become a diamond worthy of a precious stone. Some black diamonds have very pronounced inclusions, so that these stones become electrical conductors. These colored diamonds are not very sparkling, but stunning jewelry can be made from black diamonds. However, this production is extremely rare due to the difficult grinding process. Their impressive appearance makes them popular gifts, as this type of diamond in particular is a distinctive piece of jewelry. Due to the growing popularity in recent years, black diamonds are often produced using radiation from bright diamonds. Mostly stones of less good quality and purity are used, the price level of which can hardly be compared with the original. They are intensely irradiated, mostly with neutrons. This process creates a blue-green color that makes the diamond appear black and therefore noble. In spite of everything, these treated diamonds are only imitations.

Diamonds and jewelry

Diamonds have always been extremely popular with women because the rare gemstone is of high value, classically timeless and simply has a breathtakingly beautiful look. The men’s world is also quite happy to be persuaded to buy pieces of jewelry that have one or two diamonds. There are, for example, beautiful men’s watches with inlaid diamonds. Whether cut or unpolished, the diamond can be brought into different shapes and therefore become part of many breathtakingly beautiful pieces of jewelry. There are also set rough diamonds that can be worn as a ring on the hand. Most of the time, however, the rough diamonds are shaped by a special grinding process, or by grinding and polishing the diamond becomes particularly shiny and sparkles in its fullest splendor. A diamond is the ideal gemstone for rings, bracelets, necklaces, earrings or watches. Depending on the size and degree of purity, of course, the price of the coveted gemstone also differs.

Especially on special occasions, jewelry that contains one or the other valuable diamond is often given away, as everyone knows that a diamond will never go out of style and will always sparkle in the eyes of the wearer. With a piece of jewelry that is provided with a diamond, you are guaranteed to have a lifetime of great joy, but you should also make sure that the jewelry itself is also very classic and timeless, so that the entire piece of jewelry will still please years later. Of course, there is also the option of having the diamond set again and creating a new piece of jewelry from it. A diamond or brilliant works by itself in a very special way and therefore the rest of the design does not have to be elaborate. Incidentally, the brilliant is a specially cut diamond or is a type of cut of a diamond. It is important to cut the diamond so that the full refraction of light is achieved so that the gemstone sparkles and shines from all sides. Small diamonds are quite sufficient for earrings, but with a ring, the diamond can also turn out to be lush. The size of the diamond is not just a question of price, it should also suit the wearer. Diamond jewelery can be worn on many different occasions and discreet diamond jewelery can also be worn in everyday life. More elaborate pieces of jewelry are excellent accessories for weddings, balls or other festive occasions. The possible uses of diamond jewelry are very diverse. A tiara for a wedding, which is set with diamonds, can be a wonderful accessory that lets the bride shine in a wonderful light.

Rough diamonds for wholesale

Buying rough diamonds in large quantities is often associated with very high costs. But which buying tips and aspects should be considered when purchasing rough diamonds for wholesalers?

The purchase conditions are an important criterion for avoiding a bad purchase. It should be noted that the rough diamonds are acquired in daylight. To see the actual color of the diamond, it must be pointed north. Alternatively, the rough diamond can also be placed in a small, white cardboard box and illuminated with a cold light lamp so that the color of the diamond becomes visible.

However, if these purchase requirements are not met, a lamp can preferably also be used. On the other hand, so-called cold light lamps, which are provided with a special lamp, are best suited for color testing.

If rough diamonds are to be acquired that are further processed and cut after purchase, there is in many cases the risk that the diamond will burst during the cut. The bursting can be promoted either by poor quality of the diamond or by natural, internal tension. However, in order to avoid the investment being made in vain, the stone should be checked with a special diamond tester.

When analyzing the rough diamond, the buyer should take a lot of time and effort to determine as precisely as possible the weight of the diamond after it has been cut. In addition to weight, the shape, crystallization, internal tension and deformation of the rough diamond should also be checked when purchasing for wholesale.

High-quality rough diamonds of one carat only lose 48 percent of their weight when cut. The more of the weight of the rough diamond that is lost during grinding, the poorer the quality of the stone.

Any necessary equipment should also be used to test the diamonds. In this regard, the equipment includes a portable scale, a 10x magnifying glass and a diamond tester.

The most expensive gemstones in the world

What woman does not dream of a wonderful gemstone on a ring or a chain? Reasons for this are certainly that they look beautiful and are immensely valuable.

In general, gemstones are so valuable because they are seldom to be found, have an enormous hardness and a special splendor of colors or have special transparency. Today more and more artificial gemstones are produced by dyeing and firing, which of course are not worth a fraction of the original.

Already in the Stone Age, beautiful-looking and rare stones were used to trade in natural products. As one suspects, stones were also forged back then. In the Middle Ages, jewels that were almost exclusively round were traded. Today’s cut was added later.

The sapphire is one of the most valuable gemstones. It is mainly found in Burma, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Northern Pakistan, Australia. Its color is white and it can also shine in a delicate blue tone.

Another very rare and expensive stone is the green emerald, which is characterized by many cracks and inclusions. It is found and recovered in Colombia, Urals, South Africa and Brazil.

The currently most expensive gemstone, a diamond, is the so-called “Blue Wittelsbacher” which was sold in England in 2009 for 18.7 million euros. Diamonds are basically white. The following countries are considered to be the same locations: South Africa, Congo, Angola, Tanzania, Sierra Leone, Australia, Brazil, Russia.

According to the information, only a gemstone on the English royal crown should be more valuable. This is priceless and has been in human hands for over 5000 years. But no one knows exactly whether this is the truth. However, the fact is that the largest diamond found so far has been divided into a total of 105 stones. 9 of these pieces are among the Crown Jewels of England. These are kept in the Tower of London and are subject to the highest security precautions.

Basically, however, one can say that a gemstone gets its correct value from the cut, which is what makes it valuable to a large extent. There are a few different cutting techniques and shapes that are considered common. These are mostly used because they particularly refract the light falling on the gemstone. For example the diamond, which becomes a brilliant cut through a so-called brilliant cut.

Other well-known and more or less valuable gemstones are tiger’s eye, agate, obsidian and jasper

Looking for rough diamonds on vacation

For many, the diamond hunt is a worthwhile destination on vacation. If you want to look for a rough diamond, the best place to do it is in Africa. In countries like Botswana or the Ivory Coast you can always find beautiful diamonds of interesting value. If you want, you can also take an off-road vehicle tour through Namibia with a visit to the diamond restricted area. But also in India, especially here at Lake Paritala, you can always find wonderful gemstones.

For organized tours, such as in Namibia, the equipment is provided, as only operators with a license can access the area. If you want to look for rough diamonds professionally, you can also buy a very special detector – but this is only worthwhile if you really find a diamond of great value. If you want to dig for diamonds in the water, you should have different sieves with which the river sand is sifted until the diamonds are visible. The procedure here is similar to that used for panning for gold. To dig up the earth you definitely need a shovel. Since most areas are in very remote areas, you should also have water, food and a tent with you. As a rule, however, it is safer to join guided tours in order to ensure the necessary security while searching.

To prepare for the search for rough diamonds, you should find out about the most promising places in the selected country. It is mandatory to find out about the political situation and any guided and protected tours. To be on the safe side, you shouldn’t go looking for rough diamonds on your own – the gemstone is coveted and the dangers are great.

Of course, preparation also includes dealing with the subject of “precious stones”. Nothing is more annoying than when, after a long search, you rely on an almost worthless diamond in the rough. The value of the rough diamond is measured in carats. In addition, the rough diamonds are rated according to size, shape and color. Since a distinction is made between different crystals in rough diamonds, the value of the rough diamond depends on the crystal shape. Stones are more valuable than makeables and chips represent the lowest category of rough diamonds, which have hardly any value. It is therefore worthwhile to take a close look at the crystal shapes of rough diamonds before starting your search for rough diamonds.
